Biography


Neal Alexander Monroe is a Ph.D. candidate of World Language and ESL Education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He looks forward to celebrating the completion of his dissertation study, Language choices across ideological environments, in May of 2027.
He is the doctoral advisee of Dr. Clara Lee Brown, Associate Professor of ESL Education, supporting the grant-funded project: Influence of English-only laws on mainstream teachers’ instructional and literacy practices.

He was the graduate research assistant of Dr. Jennifer D. Kobrin, Assistant Professor of Adult and Continuing Education, contributing to the project: Critical data literacies for immigrant adults. He was also the graduate research assistant of Ms. Halle L. Timpson, Dr. Jennifer D. Kobrin, and Dr. James Coda, Education Research & Opportunity Center DSEW Project Team, developing the federal grant-funded project: Digital skills, education, and workforce development study.

He was the graduate research assistant of Dr. Joy G. Bertling, Associate Professor of Art Education, contributing to the federal grant-funded project: The arts-based data visualization project professional learning study.  
Tennessee TESOL awarded Centro Hispano de East Tennessee the Edie Barry Grant in December 2026. Neal currently utilizes this funding to develop a volunteer teacher induction module for the adult ESL program. He also utilized this funding to purchase professional teaching materials for this program. 

He is currently an adult ESL instructor at Centro Hispano de East Tennessee. He was an instructor for English Language Institute at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and he presently collaborates with this institute whenever possible.

His research interests include bilingualism and biculturalism, language ideology, translanguaging, teacher education, and mixed methods research.
